50 Cent Haircut is an irreverent L.A. rock band whose sound could have belonged to the Beatles if they'd grown up in Austin instead of Liverpool. Their humor is characterized by songs such as "Bring Me the Head (of a Backstreet Boy)," appearing in our broadcast with a truncated title. Hopefully they won't be tempted to take strop and razor to KaZ, also appearing today in the GroundWaves broadcast. The Vancouver-based vocalist has a long history in theater and music and was even one of the first vocal coaches for the aforementioned Backstreet Boys. Don't hold that against her, though, as her own spin on pop music is more honest and listenable than that of her former charges.
Bleed is a tight, melodic metal band from Bensalem, PA whose driving rhythms and wall of sound combine classic hard rock writing with modern metal tone and guitar sounds.
There is simply no other artist like DC's Fire-Dean. His combination of swaggering rap-like patter, delicate falsetto and huge operatic voice deliver his surreal and street-wise lyrics over bold acoustic guitars loops and drum triggers.
Forget Tull. Arlington VA's LavaJet are a punk rock band with their own flutist/keyboard player. Thankfully, the rest of the band's sound is just as interesting. Not quite hardcore punk, and certainly not pop-punk, they're all about fun and attitude--their song "Warsteiner" is about pandas ... hey, we haven't figured it out, we just like the music!
