MAZster of the Fretboard
2009.03.19

Finding a band from Birmingham that plays Texas-style boogie-woogie and Mississippi Delta blues normally wouldn't raise any eyebrows--if we were talking about Birmingham, Alabama. But the Maz Mitrenko Band hails from the original Birmingham, seven times further away in the midlands of the island of Great Britain. Mitrenko's upbeat, occasionally aggressive style brings to mind everyone from Johnny Winter to the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and vocally he reminds us of Duke Robillard or present-day Eric Clapton. If England is producing blues guitarists this authentic, then I guess you do mess with Texas!
